What is
Good Trouble?

We’re a bit different from other consultants and strategic advisers. We are interested in helping you deliver the big stuff, not writing you a 90 page report on things you already know.

We are outcomes focused and action oriented. We look for new, novel and innovative approaches to the challenges you already understand.

And we’re going to provoke and challenge – positively! – to help your leadership team shift their thinking and their approach.

We provide strategic advice, reports, workshops and other products by working with you to identify what you need (it might be different than you think).

We are also happy to say out loud the things you might be thinking. We can help (politely, usually) push boundaries when needed and challenge what might be outdated or old views to help see your future clearly.

Why Good
Trouble?

Good Trouble is about being disruptive to create fair, progressive outcomes – it reflects that you can expect something different from us: a crystal clear vision of a better outcome, and a willingness to take unconventional paths to get there.

You get actionable outcomes, pitched to the right audience.

Meet the Team

We’re Alison Lloydd-Wright and Kayla Johnson. Between us we have decades of experience in opportunity creation and problem solving to help South Australia thrive.

We bring significant senior government experience from the Department of the Premier and Cabinet including as Deputy Chief Executive, Community Culture and Place, and Director, Population Strategy, where we have worked on problems and opportunities at a global, national and local scale. We have lifetimes of knowledge of growing up here and the new views of a person who moved with no experience (but became wildly passionate) about South Australia. We bring critical thinking of law and economics and policy and politics degrees coupled with the cold hard experience you need to see what’s important. Annoyingly in love with all the parts of our state we bring connections into all the industries and all the events, we seriously love it all.

If it wasn’t clear enough, our passion is South Australia – and in particular – ensuring that SA is nationally and globally recognised as innovative, creative, connected and a magnet for talent from around the world. We’re crazy proud of our work helping to combat a 40 year trend of brain drain, by applying key principles to retain, attract and develop talent for South Australia’s economic transformation. We want to help you do that at an industry, business and location level too. We are all about helping South Australia and its organisations punch above their weight. Size and scale don’t need to be a problem if you know what you want to be known for.

One thing she wants you to know:
Instead of asking people where they went to school to find common ground we could instead ask, what has you most excited right now? Or what is something you’ve done recently you want other people to check out? So we don’t make migrants to our great state feel excluded.

Making SA Magnetic - Attracting, retaining, and unlocking talent

There’s a global, national and local war for talent and we want to help you win it.

It’s the tightest labour market in decades and young talent have more choices than ever about where they work. We want to help you understand those choices and how to orient your organisation to be attractive to the generation of under 40s who are going to be essential to the growth of your organisation, as leaders, workers and customers. Here’s a hint: it’s almost never about the pay.

And we want to help you sell South Australia as a destination for the talent you are trying to attract from interstate and overseas so that you’ve got a compelling and complete package of both a great job and a great place to live and work.

This is what we are great at and passionate about. We’ve done it at a state level and we apply our years of research and understanding about this market to your organisation

Yeah, we know it’s the hilarious failed numberplate campaign – and we love it.

South Australia’s small, medium and growing organisations rarely have the size and scale to make a splash at major interstate and international events, whether it’s SXSW Austin or a Sydney tech show. We want to fix that.

We work across multiple organisations so that for a limited buy-in you can have a presence in the places you need to be, along with other relevant South Australian organisations. We will take the hassle and disproportionate expense out by organising and finding partners who will share the costs.

We’re aggregators, making SA larger than the sum of it’s parts.

We are big picture thinkers, problem solvers and opportunity generators. We want to help you sort the essential from the nice to have. We give strategic advice on the “one big thing” that your organisation can focus on to address a particular challenge, leverage an emerging opportunity, or grow and expand.

We will research, consult and provide strategic advice to identify the things that will really turn the dial. And we will deliver back to you clear, to the point, next steps.

The work we have done inside of government is ultimately all about trade-offs. There is never the time, human and actual capital you need to do everything.

We will work with you, your Board or leadership team to guide you through critical choices that your organisation faces, helping you hone in on the ones that get you to where you want to be (not where you are now), that are authentic to your organisational values and that really turn the dial.

We run events and consultations that are energetic, engaging and focus on giving as much to participants as you want to get from them. Yes, they’ll feel a bit unusual and different to what you’re used to. But they’ll feel alive and build genuine, lasting goodwill with people you want to consult. We know because we’ve done it, as the architects of the government’s ForceForty program.

We shape leaders for the opportunities and challenges of the future, with a strong grounding in values. We’ve created diverse, creative, and strong teams (small and large), and have a contemporary approach to what leadership looks like for new generations and a new future of work. We can work with teams, organisations or individuals.

We aren’t lobbyists (we know some great ones if that’s what you need) – but we know a fair bit about how to sell things to decision-makers and purse-string-holders, at government, Board and senior executive level.

We will work with you and provide strategic, presentation and public speaking advice so that you can pitch your own project or organisation.

With combined experience of debate coaching, teaching, leading, and public speaking, we can help you find your voice and feel prepared to deliver what you need to.

Bright, engaging and cheekily provocative, we can help your event or planning day get to the outcomes you want by helping uncover the real issues and offering innovative ways of thinking and working together.

We are polite, professional and excellent readers of the room and its personalities. We want to help you talk about the elephant. We can help steer conversations and say some of the things that you’re thinking … but can’t say out loud.

Don’t underestimate the value of every interaction – everything from a great work Christmas party to a killer booth at an international conference contributes to the culture that will be a magnet for talent.
